Cecilia Danell (b.1985) is a Swedish-born, Ireland-based painter with a multidisciplinary practice that incorporates sculpture, film, and textiles. Her work explores landscape, memory, and the psychological impact of place through a distinctive and contemplative aesthetic. A recipient of numerous awards, Danell was recently awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, the 2024 Merrion Plinth Award and the 2022 RHA Hennessy Craig Award. She has also received the ESB Keating Award and Medal at the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition, a Next Generation Award from the Arts Council (2017), and the Wexford Arts Centre Emergence Award (2011), alongside multiple bursaries and project awards from the Arts Council of Ireland.
Recent solo exhibitions include These Magnetic Magnitudes at Solstice Arts Centre (Navan, 2025) curated by Brenda McParland, Kevin Kavanagh Presents Cecilia Danell at Dunamaise Arts Centre (Portlaoise, 2024), A Stillness Expanded at Claremorris Gallery (2023), Brush Lightly Through Fireweed Forests at Kevin Kavanagh (Dublin, 2022), Tactile Terrain at Luan Gallery (Athlone, 2022), I set a Bait for the Unknown at Kevin Kavanagh (Dublin, 2020) and In a Landscape at Ashford Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin, 2019) curated by Ruth Carroll with a forthcoming solo exhibition at Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin in May 2026. The gallery are also doing a solo presentation of Danell’s work at EXPO Chicago in April. Two-person exhibitions includeWhat the Plants Know at 126 Gallery during Galway International Arts Festival (2024) and Mise en scène at Centre Culturel Irlandais (Paris, 2021). Group exhibitions include In Bloom at 532 Gallery Jaeckel (Basel, 2025), the 195th RHA Annual Exhibition (Dublin, 2025), Salong Östergötland at Linköping Konsthall (Sweden, 2025), Following Threads at Crawford Art Gallery (Cork, 2023), GENERATION2022: New Irish Painting at Butler Gallery (Kilkenny, 2022) and Parklife: Biodiversity in Contemporary Irish Art at The Glucksman (Cork, 2022). She is currently undertaking a major public art commission of outdoor bronze sculptures for a new development in Donabate, Fingal.
Danell has participated in several international residencies, including Monson Arts (Maine, USA, 2024), Áras Éanna Arts Centre (Inis Oírr, 2024), Interface Inagh (Connemara, 2024), the Ballinglen Arts Foundation (2021), Centre Culturel Irlandais (Paris, 2020), and the Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale (Norway, 2016). Her work is held in public and private collections across Ireland, Sweden, and internationally, including the Arts Council of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, Ballinglen Arts Foundation and Region Kalmar, Sweden.
